Breast augmentation is a very common procedure and refers to the enlargement of the female breast by the
insertion of either a saline or silicone implant. Augmentation may be used to enhance an otherwise normal breast
that is perceived to be too small by the patient. Pregnancy or weight loss may cause the breast to lose some of its volume.
In addition, some women have asymmetry, which is described as a significant difference in either size or shape of two breasts.
Meaningful improvement can be achieved in many of these situations with the insertion of breast implants. In most cases,
breast augmentation restores the patient's sense of proportion, and, thus, leads to improved self-esteem.
The most important component of a safe and successful surgery is a thorough consultation. When you visit the Wetherington
Plastic Surgery Center I will gather vital medical information, perform a pertinent physical examination and discuss your
surgical options. We will discuss the risks and complications associated with breast augmentation. I will strive to answer
all of your questions to your satisfaction.
During your consultation you will decide on the placement of your incisions, the cup size that you wish to become and the
type of implant with which you are the most comfortable. I will explore these subjects with you and explain the subtle differences
between your options. My staff will give you written financial information and discuss scheduling.
Breast augmentation is performed in the operating room suite at the Wetherington Plastic Surgery Center utilizing an anesthetic
technique specifically designed for outpatient cosmetic surgery. The procedure takes approximately ninety minutes, and you will
be ready for discharge after a brief recovery. Most patients experience their most intense pain during the first seventy-two hours.
Sufficient recovery to return to work depends on the patient's occupation and varies between seven and fourteen days. You will
need to refrain from strenuous work or exercise for approximately four weeks. However, mild to moderate exercise may be continued
during the healing phase as long as the pectoral muscles are protected. After four to six weeks you may resume your normal level
of physical activity and enjoy your new physique. I will see you for all of your follow-up visits at no additional fee.
Breast augmentation patients typically experience a renewed sense of aesthetic proportion and self- esteem. Although not
completely without risk, breast augmentation is a relatively safe and reliable procedure that enjoys widespread popularity with
women of all ages.
