Brow and forehead tissue make important contributions to facial appearance. Signs of aging include low position of the eye brows and horizontal wrinkles on the forehead. The goal of surgical rejuvenation in this area of the face is to raise the position of the brow and reduce forehead wrinkles. The brow lift is often incorporated into other procedures such as surgery on the eye lids.
There are many techniques for brow lift with a variety of incisions and different methods of fixation. The traditional method involves an incision across the top of the scalp just behind the hairline. A more recent innovation in brow lift utilizes the endoscope, which is inserted through three to five small incisions in the scalp. These procedures are performed using general anesthesia.
Under the appropriate circumstances, less invasive methods may be used. Direct excision of forehead skin with elevation of the brow may be performed in older males. The scar blends into an existing horizontal wrinkle and fades from view in a few months. In the patient requiring a small amount of elevation a brow lift can be performed using the incision for upper eyelid blepharoplasty. These procedures can be performed using local anesthesia and intravenous sedation.
